Thanksgiving Day  or Jour de l'Action de grâce in Canadian French is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.

ALFREDO EL GRANDE

Primer Rey de  Inglaterra.

Alfredo El Grande (Alfred the Great) nació en el año 849 de nuestra era y murió cincuenta años más tarde. Fue el quinto hijo varón del rey Ethelwulfo (Ethelwulf) y su primera esposa Osburga (Osburg).

Llegó a ser rey ya que su padre dispuso que sus hijos fueran heredando el trono de forma continuada y no sólo el primogénito por derecho de sucesión.

El rey Alfredo fue un gran erudito, aprendió Latín y otras lenguas además de formarse en otras áreas tan importantes de la época como el conocimiento del arte de la guerra. Gracias a éste fue capaz de librar grandes batallas y conseguir valiosos acuerdos y tratados con sus enemigos, en especial con los daneses. Debido a uno de estos tratados incorporó al reino de Wessex, la mayor parte de Gran Bretaña que estaba bajo dominio danés, uniendo así Wessex, Mercia y parte de Northumbria y siendo, de esta forma, considerado el Primer Rey de Inglaterra.

Conseguida la paz, Alfredo el Grande destinó sus fuerzas a la enseñanza del pueblo. Mandó fundar monasterios para que enseñaran a los campesinos a leer y escribir Anglosajón y para el devenir de los tiempos mandó comenzar a escribir un libro de crónicas, The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, sobre los hechos más importantes de su reino.
